by Simone Zaugg
The performance Aus der Zeit (Out of Time) centres on the sensually charged stopping of time and the self-imposed physical standstill that leads the artist “out of time” into an unknown vacuum. The artistic intervention in the window of the gallery – on the border between art space and public space – becomes a memento mori in a world that otherwise belongs to strolling and consuming passers-by.
Simone Zaugg (*1968, Bern) lives and works in Berlin and Bern. She studied art and education at the University of Bern and the Bern School of Design as well as film and visual communication at the Gesamthochschule Kassel. She has received numerous scholarships and prizes, including the Neustart Kultur Scholarship, the Kunstfonds Foundation Working Scholarship, the Rome Scholarship at the Istituto Svizzero and the Kiefer-Hablitzel Prize. Her context- and situation-specific works in public spaces have been internationally displayed in solo and group exhibitions at venues including Kunsthalle Bern, Kunsthaus Wiesbaden, Dortmunder Kunstverein and most recently Kunstraum volume, Bern.
In addition to her artistic work, Simone Zaugg has been producing and curating international art projects together with Pfelder for more than twenty-five years, which deal explicitly with urban and landscape environments, the public sphere and public space.
