Performative listening with Udo Noll of the sound archive radio aporee

radio aporee is a platform for field recordings and sound art. The project collects field recordings from around the world and makes them accessible via an interactive world map. Users can listen to ambient sounds such as nature sounds, city noises, or recordings of special events, and upload their own recordings. The resulting acoustic archive, which allows people to experience places through their soundscapes and documents changes in living and environmental conditions, has become a valuable resource for art, education, and research.

In addition to collecting and archiving sounds, the platform also invites experimentation at the boundaries of various media and public space—“radio” here refers both to a technology in transition and to a narrative form characterized by connectivity, exchange, and the reversibility of transmitter and receiver. In this context, a series of local radio plays set in public spaces was created, among other projects. In 2010, Deutschlandradio Kultur produced the series “RadioOrtung – Hörspiele für Selbstläufer (Radio Plays for Self-Starters)” based on this concept.

Udo Noll is a media artist and graduated from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences with a degree in photographic engineering. He lives and works in Berlin and is, among other things, the founder and developer of radio aporee. Currently available and running through the end of the year is a production for Deutschlandfunk Kultur and ORF Austria that allows listeners to experience radio aporee’s sound archive as a continuous audio stream: www.hoerspielundfeature.de
