Viola Yip, Foto: Stephen Harvey

with itinerant interlude # 51: Body Electronics with Viola Yip
and Abs. (7): Closing time for curatorial research

Viola Yip premieres “The Ombré of Touch II”, an embodied electronic performance created especially for the exhibition and featuring her self-built inflatable instrument integrated with electronics. The work explores touch as a multifaceted interface for both listening and music-making, engaging directly with the physicality of air as a sculptural and sonic medium to create a highly personal, body-responsive music.

Viola Yip is a Berlin-based composer, performer, improviser, sound artist, and instrument builder from Hong Kong. Her practice centers on the creation of unconventional, self-built instruments, as well as compositions and performances that explore the complex, dynamic relationships between materiality, media, space, the human body, and the machine body – all through the lens of sound. Her work is regularly presented at venues and festivals throughout the world. In 2021, Yip received an Honorary Mention for the Giga-Hertz Award from the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) Karlsruhe, and in 2024, she was awarded a fellowship in the Artificial Intelligence and Music Program by the Musikfonds.

The itinerant interludes series is sponsored by Musikfonds e. V. and curated by Laurie Schwartz.
