Finissage and performative lecture with Veronika Radulovic (about 45 min)
The work it’s about time was created in 2014 on the occasion of a workshop at the Trondheim Art Academy in Norway and was performed at the Hanoi University of the Arts in 2015.
In an art-historical presentation, 125 artists are introduced, each with an illustration, who have dealt with the representation of time or what is referred to as ‘time-based art’. Beginning with Marey’s experiments (1880) or Duchamp (1912), the exhibition moves chronologically to action paintings from the 1950s and early performances. Among many other works on display are Abramovic/Ulay, Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol; Niki de Saint Phalle’s shooting pictures and Hans Haacke’s work in the German Bundestag.
The accompanying performative reading comprises around 700 questions. These are everyday questions that speak directly to the listener. How old are you? Or How long do you actually sleep? but also general questions such as: What is that: lifetime? Or questions in an art-historical context that establish a direct link to the works shown in the presentation: What period of time is referred to as the Russian avant-garde? Or: Was the dropping of Tinguely’s 50,000 leaflets in the 1950s considered art?
The questions are read from a handwritten paper scroll in German, which transforms into an object lying on the floor when unrolled.
This event concludes the themed anniversary year 2024 of Galerie Nord | Kunstverein Tiergarten, in which artists have explored the artistic phenomenon of time.
