Talk between Elfe Brandenburger and Burcu Dogramaci

Rabe Perplexum was part of the Munich art scene in the 1980s and 1990s. Their (queer) identities went beyond the binary categories of “she” and “he”. In their media works and performances, Rabe often involved lovers, family, friends and casual acquaintances and performed with them in art institutions, theatres, music clubs and public spaces. Rabe perplexum – “Not man, not woman, just raven” (as it says in a film portrait from 1984) – is the focus of the conversation between Elfe Brandenburger, Rabe’s friend and working partner, and the art historian and co-curator of the exhibition “Eccentric 80s”, Burcu Dogramaci. In addition, we show a video that accompanies Rabe during a painting action in the subway at Marienplatz.

Biographies

Elfe Brandenburger lives and works in Berlin. She studied at Bielefeld University with a focus on media theory. During her 20 years in Munich, she worked as a freelance video artist, video editor at B.O.A. Videofilmkunst, and as an actress with Rabe perplexum, among others. She has been a member of the artist group minimal club since 1984, which concentrated on the multimedia-performative staging of theory and text in Munich in the 1980s and continues its work in the publication of the newspaper “A.N.Y.P. zeitung für 10 jahre”. Elfe Brandenburger has edited the majority of Rabe’s videos.

Burcu Dogramaci is Professor for Art History at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary global art and photography, exile and migration. She has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant for the project METROMOD (2017–2023), which focuses on exile metropolises for modern artists. She is co-director of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg global dis:connect. Selected publications include “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies in the 20^th Century” (2020, co-ed.), “Textile Moderne / Textile Modernism” (2019, ed.), and “Fotografie der Performance: Live Art im Zeitalter ihrer Reproduzierbarkeit” (2018).
