In recent months, there has been a heated debate about how we, as citizens, can participate in opinion-forming. New parties have been founded whose declared aim is to make the supposed will of the citizens heard. There is institutionalised protest, where you can join a large movement at the click of a mouse, there is the demand for more citizens’ decisions and there is the so-called angry citizen, who has been the focus of media interest for a long time.

But if you want to change the world, you have to understand it. Those who protest must first look to see through. Anger is ill-advised. It is not about actionism, but about protes, in a reflective way and without anger; protest is exhausting, protest can quickly become populist or chic and hip. Just being AGAINST something is not always good. It is called protesting, but mostly it is CONTRADICTING.

But what do artists think when they are “against something”, how do they express their will and what strategies do they have for asserting their interests? This year’s Ortstermin gives an insight into the world of artistic resistance, alternative argumentation and reflective communication. Art offers a good anchor point for this: art requires looking, lingering and reflecting. Ortstermin 17 makes visible, offers a platform and provides space for exchange.

At the Ortstermin 17 art festival, more than 150 artists present their current works at over 70 locations: Specially conceived exhibitions, performances, art actions, readings, films, soundwalks, guided tours and much more on this year’s festival theme can broaden the view for a new understanding of protest.

The Ortstermin 17 project team would like to thank all participants and wish you and the visitors of this year’s art festival stimulating conversations, new contacts and a weekend full of art that is inspiring in every respect.
