Gedichte lesen (Reading poems, in German language)

Über Wasser und Tote / Grammatik (On Water and the Dead / Grammar), Dan Thy Nguyen

Hundreds of thousands of people fled Vietnam by sea in the late 1970s and 1980s. Ten of thousands of them arrived in the Federal Republic of Germany as so-called “boat people,” many of them in Hamburg.
In Über Wasser und Tote, Dan Thy Nguyen writes about the traces of these stories of flight: about loss and survival, about racism, trauma, and memory, about anger, grief, and a hatred that can become deeply ingrained in people’s lives.
His poems seek a language for what remains. They seek a humanism that does not gloss over violence and pain. For the possibility of letting go of hatred without forgetting. And for a way to deal with conflicting emotions that cannot simply be resolved.
The reading combines texts from Über Wasser und Tote with initial excerpts from Dan Thy Nguyen’s new collection of essays, Grammatik, which will be published by Verlagshaus Berlin in October 2026.
