with Maksym Khodak and Valeria Schiller (in English)

“In my childhood, it was called “Draw your favorite fairy-tale thief’,” said a host of late night show on a 1+1 TV channel when he told the story about Maksym Khodak’s project “My favorite oligarch”. This channel is owned by Igor Kolomoyskiy, a scandalous Ukrainian oligarch. In a talk illustrated with highlights from the story behind this project, Khodak explores how being viral means being political.

Maksym Khodak (born in 2001, Bila Tserkva, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian artist. His practice mainly deals with the topics of history and the ways of documenting it, collective memory, urban transformations, and a critical view on cinema and photography. He lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.

In this tour, Khodak presents the first three video pieces of his TikTok musical about the ongoing war in Ukraine. The artist invites Ukrainian TikTokers in Kharkiv, Kyiv and Berlin to lip sync the videos published by the Armed Forces of Ukraine which were produced to keep the morale of the citizens up. By using the popular TikTok trend of voice-overing popular video-memes Khodak translates the language of the propagandistic content created for such “outdated” types of media as TV or Facebook into the language of newer social media in aim to increase the outreach.
