with Nguyen Vu Viet Nga, Mo Art Space Hanoi (in English)
“SƠN MÀI – From Tree to Treasure: Vietnamese Lacquer Paintings from 1925 to the Present”, introduces a distinctive art form that skillfully combines innovation and tradition. This lecture will take you on a journey through the evolution of Vietnamese lacquer from the early 20th century to the present, highlighting its complex manufacturing methods, cultural significance, and enduring beauty. Discover the vast horizon of this age-old medium, where generations of artists have persistently explored and created in each of their eras. Moreover, closely tied to the socio-political context, these works of art have evolved from depicting themes of landscapes and young women to becoming a source of motivation for an unyielding spirit during the wars. Today, as artists enjoy more freedom in their practice than ever, lacquer continues to inspire endless creativity, yet proudly maintaining a strong sense of national identity.
