with Vitalii Shupliak

This work belongs to a series of works where the gesture of applying the camouflage pattern on the artist’s own body was executed: the pattern of stigma which was left in the consciousness and memory of people involved in war. The image of a uniform is a simple and empty gesture with no consequence, whereas war stigma stays on the body. The title “The Tattoo” is inspired by indelible signs. However, it should be interpreted not only as a sign on a body, but also as the trace in one’s consciousness.

Vitalii Shupliak (b. 1993 in Berezhany, Ukraine) mainly works in video, installation and performance. In his work he deals with the understanding of one’s identity and the consequences and impact of migration. He is the initiator of Pi Gallery and has developed the residency program „Kruta Art Residency.“ Shupliak lives and works in Berlin
