with a performative intervention by Elisa Duca
Artists: Robin Detje, Elisa Duca
The installation “Processing:Moabit” begins on 3 May with an opening performance. The artists occupy the partly empty gallery space with objects before the eyes of the visitors and constantly develop the installation as a living organism over the entire duration of the exhibition. They have been strolling through the Moabit district for weeks, collecting objects, personal encounters and stories that can become components of the installation. Galerie Nord opens its spaces to an incalculable performative process, whose path and shape emerge in the process of becoming. There will be no final state of the installation, but only the end of an exhibition period.
Nothing remains as it is. No thing remains in its place. No human being remains in its place. There is no standstill, there is no purity. And there are no boundaries. When I put my hand on the tabletop, a few atoms of my skin go into the tabletop and a few atoms of the tabletop go into my skin. The fact that I don’t turn into wood and the tabletop doesn’t turn into a human being is perhaps more of a coincidence.
Our performative installation undermines this normality. Things collected in Moabit, underpinned by stories heard in Moabit, are remixed. According to new rules that can change daily. A world of madness, perhaps. Dissolution of boundaries, rulelessness, nonsense. Emptying of meaning, reshuffling of meaning. Production of new sense through nonsense. A counter-world emerges, still a mirror of everyday life in Moab, but uninhabitable. Unless one finds other criteria, other methods of settling in there and using this world.
The objects that make up our installation come from many different worlds that all coexist. The people who use them speak different languages. We mix their things. The term “creolisation” is important for us here. It refers to a “joyful practice of transplantation” that positively occupies contradictions and opposites.
We work on an aesthetics of coexistence, on democratisation in a parliament of things and living beings. There is no Anthropocene. There is a community of minerals, gases, bacteria, fungi and viruses, of cleaning buckets, mandarins, tights, washing-up sponges, tow ropes, cauliflowers, which takes us humans in, regardless of our cultural origins and without judging us.
