Workshops with Adelheid Mers and students from Bauhaus University Weimar and the School of the Art Institute Chicago.

Adelheid Mers Diagrammatic Templates derive from highly compressed texts on art and culture and conversations, especially with women artists. At the same time, they contain the invitation to be unfolded performatively, experimentally and playfully in new conversations. Therefore, workshops in which visitors are introduced to the diagrams and then actively try them out together are an elementary component of this exhibition.

Three modules are offered. “The Fractal 3-Line Matrix” is a two-dimensional tool that visualises non-hierarchical forms of information gathering. In the workshop we will try out the multiple functions of the template on a text example. Participants will learn to apply the method contained in the matrix independently or even to modify it.

The three-dimensional module “The Braid” invites us to look synergistically at social, scientific and creative conditions, under which participants in the workshop themselves operate on a daily basis. Participants from the cultural field working in artistic, critical-theoretical and administrative-leadership positions are invited to inscribe their observations in the template in rotating groups of two.

The workshop module “Performative Topologies” is conceived as a play and movement laboratory. Unlike the other two workshops, the starting point here is a purely linguistic algorithm. This module asks how the presentation of an imaginary object under rapidly changing perspectives (e.g. imagining and describing, sketching and noting, as well as gestural representation) contributes to the understanding of one’s own value discovery. Here, a spatial diagram, so to speak, emerges from the joint performance that concludes the workshop.

Through their contributions to the workshops, participants on the one hand support the artist in the further development of her work, Performative Diagrammatics, on the other hand they have the opportunity to actively test and share their own processes of perception, evaluation, thinking and representation.
